[LPJ Design] Races of Obsidian Twilight: Lykian (PRPG) Preview released

Louis Porter Jr. Design, has released its first preview for the upcoming post apocalyptic survival horror fantasy setting, Obsidian Twilight for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. Here is information on the Races of Obsidian Twilight: Lykian (PRPG) Preview:

Abaddon Werewolf Lycanthropes, most commonly called Lykians, are one of the most unusual residents of the world. Unlike the standard lycanthrope, Lykians are born as lycanthropes and do not suffer from the lycanthropic disease but are considered to be a separate humanoid race with the shapechanger subtype. Before the apocalypse there were many that carried the curse of lycanthropy but due to unknown, powerful, magical forces, the curse has taken on a new form which the Lykians have evolved directly from. Lykians, unlike lycanthropes, have only one physical form, despite their shapechanger subtype. They are considered by many to be extremely bestial, hostile and brutish in nature – like their canine lineage. Their primal nature will often usurp and control their cognitive and reasoning abilities. Written by Written by James Desborough with Louis Porter Jr. Available Here!!!

LPJ Design teaming up with Adamant Entertainment…maybe

This is something I have wanted to do for a while since I buried the hatchet with Gareth almost a year ago. With both of us supporting Paizo’s Pathfinder Roleplaying Game it seemed an naturally good idea. The real issue I think for both of us was time and money. Whatever we agree to work on would have to take a little bit of time and make money to be worth our time to focus on. So I kicked a around a few ideas in my head and nothing really came. Then something came to my mind that I thought would be great for both of us. But before I announce this idea I need to check two more facts but after that I should be good to go. So if you are a Pathfinder Roleplaying Game you might be in for a treat. Talk to later…

100 Greatest Quotes From The Wire

The title says it all in this one. Enjoy!

Who knew they had plastic surgery in ancient fantasy settings...

This is the finished art work for the Emissary.  I really love the character design work this artist does.  It is nice when you can give an artist a lot of freedom and let them do what they do best.  Talk to you later...

[Nexodus: A House Divided] First sketch of the Emissary

When I made NeoExodus: A House Divided, I brought over the ideas and concepts of the Painted Man and Lawgiver from other fantasy ideas I had coming up with. Out of them I created Kaga. Kaga fit really well in the setting and I loved what it represented. But I while back, I thought about how Kaga should have a direct opponent to oppose what it stands for. And with that I came up with the Emissary. I finally got the artist to start working on sketches for the Emissary. This sketch is rough, but you can see this character has a lot of Asian / East Indian influence to it. The final image will not have swords; she has a lot of levels in monk so her best weapons are her hands and feet. I can't wait to see the final version. Talk to you later...

Pirates always make adventures better with Pathfinder...

Well just to keep you updated on our plans, I am currently editing one of 4 new third party publisher based Pathfinder Roleplaying Game adventure modules from our new gaming line called, Campaign Adventure Modules, or CAM as I call it.  CAM spun off of the Sidetrek Adventure Weekly idea that we did in 3.5 OGL and Pathfinder Society adventures.  So if you like what Paizo has done with its line of Pathfinder Society adventures, then you will be a huge fan of Campaign Adventure Modules. We wanted to give you that same feel and playability of the Pathfinder Society adventures with in our Campaign Adventure Modules.  The adventure I am currently working on is the Last Voyage of the Widow’s Kiss.  It has pirates, dangerous monsters, hidden treasure and island.  So fans of pirates and high sea adventure, be on the look out for Last Voyage of the Widow’s Kiss coming soon.  Talk to you later...

DC Comics' Second Feature Idea

One of my favorite business ideas of late has been DC Comics' Second Feature in comic.  DC has added 8 pages of a different story and increased the cost from $2.99 to $3.99 with their Second Feature idea and I think it was a genius idea.  Marvel increased the price from $2.99 to $3.99 without increasing the page count or quality.  DC always to me seemed to look very far in the future business-wise on good ideas they what to do.  This Second Feature idea I think would work well in the RPG industry on adventures like a full adventure with a continuing Sidetrek attached to it.  The main adventure could be a one-off with the sidetrk being part one of six.  Just some thing I was think about.  Maybe I will do something about it.  Talk to you later...

Neal Bailey is the hardest working RPG writer I know…

Neal Bailey has done a lot of work for LPJDesign over the years he has worked for us. Whenever I need something done I will ask Neal first before anyone else especially if it is about mechanics or game design. I am a huge fan of his work. Neal’s latest project is the all new Race Creation Cookbook for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. This will be a great additional to the LPJ Design products. This post is just a little thank you to all the hard work he does. Thanks again, Neal for all your hard work. Talk to you later…

The new Project X is the most daring project I have ever thought of …

While at work I came up with the newest idea for my latest Project X. I don’t have a real name of the product yet so I will be calling it Project X for a while. What is this Project X? Well first off, it is not a RPG or game of any type. It is completely internet based and best of all it could change and revolutionize a complete industry. That is not a boast, it is an actual fact. This could change an industry like how iTunes and the iPod changed the music industry. No really. It is that big. What is it? I am not telling. Well at least for now, until I finish the business plan for it and do some cash flow projections. Project X will be a multi-million dollar idea with massive repercussion in its industry. So first I need to find some back end web developers (elance.com and Craislist.com here I come!) and then I have to look at getting funding from a venture capital firm. I mean LOTS of funding. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Official Trailer

Since the game is being reelased tomorrow I though you might enjoy this. Click here to see! Enjoy!!!

Table Top RPGs are NOT future "IP Prototyping" and here is why…

I read this on Saturday at Gareth’s post Rough Beasts Starting To Slouch.... with Malcolm Sheppard about what it all means for the future of the business and I started to laugh. The reason that I laughed it that Table Top RPGs are NOT future "IP Prototyping". This a very simple reason, to the video game market table top RPG don’t exist and that is because most table top RPGs companies and setting (roughly 99% of them) don’t have a large enough audience. Think about it, if WOTC is the king of the market and they have only 1 million of active players that is really NOT a lot of people. The Halo franchise is one of the best-selling video game franchises of the last decade. Wired Magazine said during the two months following Halo: Combat Evolved's release, it sold alongside more than fifty percent of Xbox consoles and then sold a million units in four months. Halo 2's is quoted in generating $125 million on its premiere day. Halo & Halo 2 sold 14.8 million units BEFORE the release of Halo 3. Table top RPGs don’t sell anywhere near that. Hell, if you sell 100 copies on RPGNow.com you are considered to be a top seller. 100 copies. Top seller.

I worked for a small video game developer and manufacture in from 2001 – 02 called Xicat Interactive, where I got a chance to see how the video game industry really works behind the scenes. Hell, I even have credits on video games where I did quality insurance and development. Their best seller when I was there was X-Plane and it sold just over a 100,000 copies. For a table top RPG to get noticed by anyone slightly important, it would have to sell t least 25,000 which is the equivalent selling equal to Solomon Grundy #7 from DC Comics (25,905 units) or Outsiders #22 from DC Comics (22,756 units) or Incredible Hercules #134 from Marvel (25,359 units) or Guardians of Galaxy #18 from Marvel (24,875 units) or even Nova 29 from Marvel (23,904 units). And you are considered a success if you sell 5,000 copies of a RPG to a game store.

The numbers are not there. Sorry. I wish they were but they are not. So you might have to accept that the table top RPG you are working on will not be the greatest thing since sliced bread. Find a way to increase the numbers then this will all change but until then…

Talk to you later…

[LPJ Design] Obsidian Twilight to be released as 100% Open Game Content

Well after many personal debates on what I want to do with Obsidian Twilight and what I want it to be, I have decided to make an important decision on the issue of Obsidian Twilight.

Obsidian Twilight is to be completely 100% Open Game Content for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. For most people it is no big thing, but this was a big one for me. I created the concept of Obsidian Twilight and I wanted to make it my own little “playground”. But after thinking about it for a while, Obsidian Twilight really works better as a setting that any gamers, fan and even publishing company wants to use as they see fit. I hope this will inspire other RPG companies that support the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game to make product for this project. This is a labor of love and I want everyone to enjoy it.

For those that are still interested, the Obsidian Twilight Help Save a Life Blood Donation is still ongoing (see here for more info). So if you wanted to participate and get a free copy of Obsidian Twilight and help save a life, now is your chance.

We still have no official release date, but we are planning for a Summer 2010 release. This may be changed to due to specific factors (The birth of my first child is one of these factors) but we at LPJ Design will do our best to keep you updated on Obsidian Twilight current status. Thank you for your support on this project.

Which is the better to sell RPG PDFs at: RPGNow or Paizo?

Here is a little experiment I have been researching of late with some interesting results. RPGNow has always been the site where I make the most sale of my PDF products that I sell. Well that was true until the introduction of 4E by WOTC and WOTC withdrawing from RPGNow. Plus with Paizo releasing Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, my sales on it have jumped amazingly. As of right now, my sales at Paizo are twice what they are with RPGNow. They are lots of reasons for this and one important factor to think about is LPJ Design have over 400 products to sell on RPGNow and only 160 products on Paizo. So what is going on?

So let’s do the math: if I sell $100 on RPGNow, then based on the statement above on Paizo, I would sell $200 worth. Now let’s subtract the percentage each company take for their services of placing my product up and hosting it. RPGNow is 35% while Paizo is 25%. Using the numbers stated above:

RPGNow = $100 ($65 for LPJ Design; $35 for RPGNow)

Paizo = $200 ($150 for LPJ Design; $50 for Paizo)

With all these facts you realize that I am paying more of a percentage of my sales for RPGNow because of their marketing, behind the scenes coding and impressive back end support. But as anyone can see, for every $1 I make at RPGNow I make $2 at Paizo. On top of that, Paizo charges me less of a percentage for what it does. Now they don’t have all the impressive bells and whistles that RPGNow has, but I think if a site can double your sale is pretty much impressive enough.

So what is the better site to sell at as a PDF publisher? Well the answer is obvious, BOTH OF THEM!!!!

While Paizo sales are hot NOW this might not last and vice versa with RPGNow. Your job as a publisher is to sell you product. Today, Paizo might be the big seller and tomorrow it might be someone else. Just sell in as many places as possible, check your numbers and you will do fine. Talk to you later…
