I wonder why Pathfinder reviewer Megan Robertson hasn't reviewed LPJ Design products in a while...

What do you think it could be.  I have sent her all our our latest Pathfinder materials, but the last time she reviewed anything from us was February 27 of this year.  Maybe we did something wrong and she is mad at us? I don't think so.  Maybe she wants to wait until she gets the NeoExodus: A House Divided Campaign Book (coming out soon) to review that? I hope so.  So if anyone knows, including Megan, just let us know and we will provide you with what every you might need or want from LPJ Design.  Just let us know.  Talk to you later...

Playtesters wanted for NeoExodus: A House Divided

We at LPJ Design make no secret that I want to see NeoExodus become a household name. For that, I need to make sure what we have is great and could be picked up by GMs across the globe and run for their home group. Thus far, the reaction has been very positive, but I seek to get a wider range of groups.

We are looking for a few (two or three) groups of play-testers (GM plus 3-6 players) who would be willing to run a few sessions of NeoExodus for their home group and provide feedback to us about the experience.

 How to apply
Send an email to JP at Playtesters {at} Chapleau.us and be sure to include the following information, and anything else you think you would be good for that

1) Who is part of your group? (Names, anything of interest about you)
2) Have you ever play-tested or reviewed anything? What? Were any recommendations you did added to the game?
3) Why do you think your group of best-suited to become play-testers for NeoExodus?
4) How often do you meet?
5) Where is your group located, geographically?

Compensation
You will be given play-tester credits in the NeoExodus Campaign Book (and any future NeoExodus book you participate in testing). The GM will get a copy of the finalized PDF of the book.

 Thanks for your help!

How much of free do I have to give away until I start to make money?

If I have said it once I have said it a million times, cash flow is the life blood of any business. But if that is true, how can you make money by giving things away? Google is free to use, but it makes billions of dollars in revenue.  This is an issue I have been thinking about for months and how it relates to the RPG industry.  Webcomics have tackled this issue and seem to have it under some control. Take a look at PvP, Sheldon, Evil Inc., Starslip and Girls with Slingshots to see successful business that make money by giving away their main product for free.  Why can you not find any “successful” RPG companies using this model? Is it because our niche is too niche?  How much free do I have to give away until I start to make money? What do you think. Let me hear your opinions on this topic.  Talk to you later...

What our friends at Gamer Ingenuity are working on...

Our friends over at Gamer Ingenuity are working on a very cool project called Boosted Bestiary.  As you can see that have been working on this for a while.  They were kind enough to give me a rough draft of two pages of the upcoming project. Now before you say it, the stat blocks are not complete or edited so if you see a mistake it it, DON'T be surprised, it still is a work in progress. But as you can see, its a NICE work in progress.  Talk to you later...

Jim Shooter talking about rates and contacts while at Marvel & DC Comics and why RPG publishers should listen...

The legendary Jim Shooter of Marvel Comic fame has a blog where he talks much about the comic book industry and his involvement in it. A few days ago he did a post talking about contracts and working for Marvel and DC Comics.  The thing that REALLY stood out to me on the contract was the artist, writing and plotting page rate amounts. They were all listed at $60 per page. $60 a page I am guessing was the "starter rate" and that was Marvel 10 years ago.   Now look at his DC freelance contract rate from 2007 - 2008. $100 a page? This guy has been the editor and chief at BOTH Marvel Comics and Valiant Comics and is on record for being the youngest paid writer EVER comics from a major (DC or Marvel) company and all he got was $100 a page.  I can bet you those rate might have actually gone DOWN due to so many new artists and writers looking to break in to the comic book industry and the book sales going DOWN. So I guess that $100 a page for artwork for a RPG page is looking a little over priced to me when most RPG don't sell over 5,000 copies.

Now this Marvel Comics contract was from 2001 / 2002 but best of all it also included the Marvel Comic Incentive plan for the creative staff to make more money if their books sold better. Years ago (and I am talking about early to mid 1990s) I was talking to John Byrne about how much money he made while working on Fantastic Four and he told me since FF was selling so well (over 200k copies at the time) his incentive money was much, MUCH more than his regular paycheck from them. Kind of like a waitress, you make your real money on the tips and you get a paycheck.  If you want to be real scary, Chris Claremont and Jim Lee sold 8 million copies of X-Men #1 in the 1900s and just using the basic math on the incentive plan and "guestimating" on a few things, you can think that both Jim Lee and Claremont each maybe made over $100K on that single book off of their incentive plan. Now that is an incentive plan.

After looking at this article it only makes me shake my head even more when people are asking for $150 for a single character design or 8 cents a word to write. If Marvel and DC Comics wouldn't pay you that much, why do you think I would, or better yet, be able to do it.  The ability to make a RPG for a reasonable amount is what helps keep us ALL in business. Think about that next time you do some freelance work. Maybe you should ask about an incentive plan for companies you work for over a flat rate. Looks like both of you could turn out winner on that.  Talk to you later...

Making Small RPG PDFs into small POD RPG books...

With the advent of print-on-demand (POD) publishing, I am doing something I always thought about doing but couldn't due to pricing issues, and that is make small (18 to 24 pages) RPG printed books for a reasonable selling price.  After checking my numbers and figures I have discovered that doing a POD book that short so little it is VERY profitable for LPJ Design.  For example, Trade Routes: Expanded Caravan Rules Sourcebook (PFRPG) has a PDF sale cost of $2.99 and a POD sale price of $7.99. Better still, if you want both the PDF and POD it will only cost you $8. A whole penny more than the POD version will get you both.  An 18 page sourcebook for only $7.99 is more than just a good thing, it's a GREAT thing.

Think back to old school Dungeon & Dragons module adventures, how many pages was White Plume Mountain? 16 pages. How about Slave Pits of the Undercity? 16 pages. How much did they cost back then? $5 I think.

Here is a thought for 3PPs, imagine what is would be worth to be able to do four 18 page adventures and sell them for $7.99 each. Then collect them together together in a "super adventure edition" with an all new 18 page adventure built exclusively for this edition.  You sell the "super adventure edition" for $19.99 as a POD  book and no one blinks an eye at the price. Why? with a page count of 96 pages and $19.99 is reasonable. Better yet, if you do this right and keep cost down, you can sell these POD books directly to RPG retailers and cut out the middle man of the distributor looking to get a large percentage for doing what you could do yourself. You get new customers buying your product; plus the retailer gets unique and (sometimes) exclusive products to bring into their store to help bring more customers in.  We call that in the business world a WIN- WIN. Small is the new big in the new economy.  Talk to you later...
