Would you pay more for a magazine if it didn’t have ads it it?

Just reading an article today, RPG Magazines – Essential orOutdated? and it got me thinking, would I pay more for a magazine that offered no ads, but more content versus and standard magazine with basic content and ads?  I am a subscriber to many magazines including Inc and I have noticed that the ad content has been slowly creeping up in number.  So I have to wonder to offset the cost of color printing, which can be high, would I pay more for better content.  Now in my head, I say YES, but would I really pay for it?  People complain when they have to pay 1 cent more for things, so I could guess this might have some weird backlash. Are you willing to pay more for good content? Better yet, are you willing to pay less for OK content?  What do you think?  Talk to you later…

Meet the Scythians of NeoExodus…

In the world of NeoExodus there is no greater danger than the First Ones. One of the greatest creation of the First Ones is they warrior race called the Scythians. Here is a little background about them:

The Scythian is a humanoid race of violent brutes serving the First Ones. Scythians have only one thing on their mind: violence. They live for killing and mayhem. Scythian soldiers are the most common types of Scythian encountered by the outside world. While no one on the surface of Exodus has reported a Scythian in the last five centuries, they are far from forgotten. The Scythians are soldiers of the First Ones. Not as tough as the kroca, nor as stealthy as the sobeka nor as numerous as the exodites, the Scythians were cunning and dangerous opponents. They revel in mayhem and destruction to a level rare even among the First Ones.

One month since NeoExodus: A House Divided Campaign setting was released and still no reviews

OK this one is going to be short and to the point: Why hasn't ANYONE reviewed NeoExodus: A House Divided Campaign Setting. I mean I have not seen anything on this book. Good or bad.  All I hear is the sound of silence. Which is funny. because on the business side of this all I hear is the cash register ringing from all the people who picked it up. This books is a solid seller for us, BUT it has NO REVIEWS.  I know this book is the best setting on the market for Pathfinder. I know our book looks beautiful. I know we have made a successful product. What I don't know is what we did do wrong or what did we miss or better yet what did we leave out that you wanted to see?

The really weird part to all this is we sent out review copies of this book a few weeks before we released the sale version so reviewers have had this book for over six weeks.  So come on people don't let me twist and turn and get tied into knots over the Christmas season over this book, give us a review. And if you are feeling extra nice, go over to our Free RPG Day NeoExodus Adventure for Pathfinder Kickstarter project. Support the cause. Meet the Caliban of NeoExodus…

NeoExodus boasts a wide arrange of unusual and unique monsters that exist in the setting. One of the most common and dangerous monsters that stalks the world of Exodus is that of the Caliban.  Here is a little background on them:

Calibans are cannibalistic creatures that can be found throughout Exodus, though they are most commonly found in the Wyldlands where their brutality has earned them the admiration and friendship of many rulers. The calibans share mankind’s hatred and fear of the First Ones who enslaved them long ago.

What do they have to do with the upcoming Free RPG Day adventure, Undying Legacy of the First Ones, I guess you will have to wait and see.

Free RPG Day NeoExodus Adventure for Pathfinder RPG Kickstarter Project Starts!

Starting today, LPJ Design is starting their Free RPG Day NeoExodus Adventure for Pathfinder RPG Kickstarter Project.  This adventure, Undying Legacy of the First Ones, will be released on June 16, 2012 during the international gaming event known as Free RPG Day.  Undying Legacy of the First Ones will serve as an introductory adventure and showcase of the NeoExodus: A House Divided campaign setting with its unique differences from all the other gaming campaign on the market for the Pathfinder RPG. This uniquely exceptional adventure will only help draw interest to NeoExodus and in turn, helping to support the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game created by Paizo Publishing.

Undying Legacy of the First Ones is being written by the Pathfinder Society Denver Venture Captain and NeoExodus Creative Designer, JP Chapleau with the project is being overseen by LPJ Design Owner Louis Porter Jr. Porter has been involved in the RPG industry for the last decade starting with the creation and development of Haven: City of Violence campaign setting. This setting is the only RPG to receive a movie option by Radical Comics owner, Barry Levine, even before the setting was released to the general public.
The reason for this kickstarter project is to generate the funds needed to pay for the cost of production, printing and delivering this adventure to the premiere retail gaming stores to giveaway during Free RPG Day. This adventure will help increase the interest in the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game which in turn will increase their interest in 3rd Party Publishers like LPJ Design and the NeoExodus: A House Divided setting.

Those interested in learning more about the NeoExodus: A House Divided setting can check out NeoExodus Chronicles: World of Exodus completely for free.

Thanks for your support of Pathfinder RPG, 3rd Party Publishers and the NeoExodus: A House Divided setting.

Dreamscarred Press and Raging Swan supports our Free RPG Day NeoExodus Adventure for Pathfinder RPG

So with only a few days to go until we start our Free RPG Day NeoExodus Adventure for Pathfinder RPG, I want to let you all in on a little secret that we have been holding back for this project. We have been speaking with several 3rd Party Publishers looking to add them to our list of special rewards that this project will be presenting and offering. The first two 3PP that agreed to support and add special rewards to this were Dreamscarred Press and Raging Swan.  Anyone who follows our NeoExodus threads on this blog knows that the Section Omega Secret Society PDF uses Dreamscarred Pathfinder Psionic Unleashed as the rules set for its basis. And my personal feeling about Raging Swan and the quality of their work is more than well know.  We hope to announce even more 3PP to this already impressive list. Because we have ANOTHER great surprise to announce if this project is successful as I think and hope it will be. So if you are a fan of 3PP or you are a 3PP who wants to join in and help make this project a success, just drop me an email and we will do everything to make this a success.  Thanks for everyone support of this.  Talk to you later...

Free RPG Day NeoExodus Adventure for Pathfinder RPG Trailer

You have been waiting for it. Now see the trailer video for our upcoming Free RPG Day NeoExodus Adventure for Pathfinder. Enjoy and Talk to you later...

The moment I am proudest as a publisher...

A few days ago I got this email:

Sorry to bother you, my name is Graham  and I am currently taking a Web Development Course up in Canada.  For my final Project I have to create a Web Site and I have chosen to do one based around your Campaign setting of NeoExodus (which I very much enjoy).  With your permission I would like to use the NeoExodus Logo and some imagery as part of my assignment.

and my answer of course was sure just let me know what you need. And today in my email I got this:

Thanks again for letting me use your stuff.  I thought you might be interested in seeing the site before I hand it in.  It's only my first semester so it's not super-pro or anything but I figured I should let you see it before the Prof wipes the files for the holidays.  (I still have to give it a once over for spelling and broken links and such before I hand it in but it's pretty much finished.)

(Hiding link for now - until his professor approves the work)

Thanks again and I'm looking forward to seeing more of what you come up with.

I think it looks great and he did great work. It's nice when your work inspires other people. This is the moment I am proudest as a publisher.  Talk to you later...

Support the cause! Support 3rd Party Publishers of Pathfinder!

I completely understand that the world isn't fair. Some people are going to get more than others. It doesn't make it right, it just makes it reality.  But even knowing that the world isn't fair, it doesn’t stop me from doing something that other would consider insane and even silly. Like telling people when it comes to gaming, it doesn't matter if something is official, it only matter if it is good.   That’s right I said it. If the rules work, no matter who made them, just use them.  Even better, you have to remember every person who makes a 3rd Party product for use with Pathfinder IS SUPPORTING PATHFINDER. I believe most 3rd Party Publishers (3PP) are like LPJ Design: They have amazing love of what Pathfinder is and want to make sure other people can enjoy it as much as they do.  Best off all we know that Paizo will not be able to or even want to cover every genre in fantasy in Pathfinder that people would like to see.  The people at Paizo are very busy and have to pick what is best for them in the long run. While at the same type we 3PPs can make the niche product that Pathfinder fans can find useful.  Better still, many of the people who make 3PP products have worked for Paizo in the past as a freelancer. So if you loved their creation when they worked for Paizo, why would you not love what they are doing as a 3PP?

So this weekend, while working on our upcoming kickstarter project, I came up with a few little banners that said it best about 3PP, Pathfinder and the fanbase.

300 x 250

468 x 60

728 x 90 (Re-sized to fit on screen)

So if you support 3PPs, Pathfinder or Paizo take a second, save these banners (please don’t hotlink) and place these banners up at your website, blog, forum or anywhere you think it makes sense.  Like I said, when you are supporting a 3PP, you are supporting Pathfinder.  Talk to you later…

Finished the NeoExodus Kickstarter video plus some good news...

Well I am happy to say that the NeoExodus kickstarter video is complete with the music I wanted in the background.  I am happier with this kickstarter video compared to other ones I have done in the past. Reading over the information at Daniel Solis' 10 TIPS FOR A KICKSTARTER VIDEO FOR A GAME PROJECT was very helpful.

We do have some good news about this project, BUT we can't tell you what it is yet.  The reason is because everything is not set in stone, but it's very close. So expect to hear some thing about this very, very soon and it will be GOOD news for this project.  Talk to you later...

Adding interesting visual elements to special rewards for our Kickstater project..

Here is an interesting visual elements idea that I “stole” from the highly successful Womanthology; Massive All Female Comic Anthology! They have little banners on the side of there page that explain what their special rewards are. When I saw this I thought what a great visual element idea to kickstarter. Now giving special rewards for kickstarter is no new idea, but turning the rewards into cool looking little banners, I think will only help sell the project we are trying to build.  So I had to steal that idea and here are a few I have been working that you can expect to see in our Free RPG Day NeoExodus Adventure for Pathfinder RPG kickstarter project.

If the project does well and we reach our goal, we will also have threshold rewards and banners so the more money we raise, the more cool things we will make.  Once again I can’t thank Steve over at Rite Publishing and Gareth at Adamant Entertainment enough for giving me great ideas and support to help make this upcoming project a success.  Talk to you later…

Free RPG Day NeoExodus Adventure for Pathfinder RPG Rewards you would like to see...

We at LPJ Design have built an impressive list of pledge rewards for those that will be donating for our upcoming Free RPG Day NeoExodus Adventure for Pathfinder RPG. But, we have also been wondering what reward might we have over looked. What special and unique rewards would Pathfinder fans like to see? So now we are asking the Pathfinder fans for input: What rewards can we add to make the Free RPG Day NeoExodus Adventure for Pathfinder even more interesting and a success? If you want to see us offer it, tell us!! Remember Exposing Pathfinder to more people is what the Free RPG Day NeoExodus Kickstarter Adventure is all about. Thank for you for your continued support of LPJ Design, NeoExodus and Pathfinder. Talk to you later.

Exposing Pathfinder to more people is what the NeoExodus Kickstarter Adventure is all about...

As anyone who comes to this blog knows that all the members of LPJ Design are more than just fans of Pathfinder, we are evangelist for Pathfinder. The folks at LPJ Design talk about Pathfinder with that same excitement a football fans talks about the playoffs or a NBA fan talks about the playoffs. Pathfinder and getting people to play and enjoy Pathfinder is serious business to us here at LPJ Design. So when the idea of supporting Pathfinder with Free RPG Day product and help spread the excitement of Pathfinder came up, all of us were excited. But one little thing held us back.

See on September 30, 2011, I, Louis Porter Jr. was let go from my position as webmaster. While I didn't like that it happened, I knew it was going to happen so it was not a surprise. My former employer did a great job to make sure I received a nice severance package from them to get myself and family through for a while. So with all this going on I talked it over with my wife and she agreed. I decided to do something I talked about doing for years and I always wanted to. I decided to take a crazy chance on myself and make LPJ Design my full time job. Thanks right, I became a full time game designer. Over the last few months, I have been moving in the direction to help generate interest in what we at LPJ Design have been doing. And what we do is make amazing products for use with Pathfinder.

The crown jewel of LPJ Design's support of Pathfinder is NeoExodus: A House Divided gaming line. Though I have been working on NeoExodus for the last 4 years, it wasn't until JP Chapleau joined me, that things started to click. And now, we have created the newest, most exciting Pathfinder supported campaign setting in the RPG industry. NeoExodus is unique in just about every way compared to any other released or upcoming fantasy setting but best of all, our focus is not trying to "another" Golarion type fantasy setting. We don't want to be Golarion. We want to be NeoExodus and that is the point. Some people like vanilla ice cream, some like chocolate ice cream and some other like Rocky Road. We made sure everything about NeoExodus would be different from Golarion, but at the core, we would STILL be a Pathfinder fantasy campaign setting and that is what is important.

We are not looking to add all kinds of new rules and complexities to the NeoExodus setting. Pathfinder has already created a well built and balanced gaming system of play with the game engine of Pathfinder. We are just looking to give you a completely new look and feel at what a fantasy setting could be. We gave people a chance to look over the setting when we first released NeoExodus Chronicles: World of Exodus absolutely for free and we just released the finalized PDF version of the NeoExodus: A House Divided Campaign Setting. The print copy of the campaign setting will be available in retail game stores by February / March 2012 giving people a lot of time to experience the excitement and amazement in the setting. When Free RPG Day comes in June 2012, this NeoExodus adventure; with the Jon Brazer Enterprise's Shadowsfall: the Temple of Orcus succesful kickstarter adventure; in addition to the Pathfinder Free RPG Day adventure will be another piece to help grow the overall success of Pathfinder in the RPG market.

Like the title of this blog post states: Exposing Pathfinder to more people is what the NeoExodus Kickstarter Adventure is all about. That is the real reason we want you to support us with our kickstarter project. Thanks for your support. Talk to you later...

[LPJ Design] Free RPG Day NeoExodus Adventure for Pathfinder RPG

Inspired by the actions of Jon Brazer Enterprise, LPJ Design has decided to start a Kickstarter.com project in the hopes to release a free NeoExodus: A House Divided adventure for Free RPG Day to be distributed to retail locations. This adventure; written by the LPJ Design creative designer, JP Chapleau with artwork from NeoExodus: A House Divided Campaign Book artists including Bruno Miguel Martins Balixa, Juan Diego DIanderas, Yama Orce; will be an introduction adventure to the world of Exodus and the campaign setting of NeoExodus.

Our goal is to reach $1,000 in funding with this kickstarter project which will make it possible for us to provide one free adventure in each Free RPG Day box. But we have also included additional higher threshold goals if we reach, will increase the amount of free copies we giveaway and also other rewards to the patrons of this project. We are going to have various award levels starting as low as $1 with additional Special “Locked” Awards which be “unlocked” a to receive unique rewards including naming specific locations in the adventure and even naming the special NPCs in the adventure themselves. We are planning to start this kickstarter project at the end of December and having it run until the beginning of February. Head over to the LPJ Design blog from sneak previews, updates and a little behind the scenes of making this project successful. All those interested in learning more about this project, check out the LPJ Design Blog or like us on Facebook. Thank you for your interest and support on this project.

What I thought was a niche, wasn't really a niche...

I was talking to Steve over at Rite Publishing about the whole Kickstarter concept basically trying to figure out what I have done wrong in the past to not get the kind of response I was looking for with my Kickstarter projects.  In the middle of the conversiation he said something to me that was shocking and a little surprising, at least to me. I was taking about the attempt I had made at Kickstarter with Obsidian Twilight and I thought it was in the perfect niche to get funded. Steve said something that kind of took me back about Obsidian Twilight:

Me: I "thought" I had passion of Obsidian Twilight and it was niche enough, but that didn't do well. On kickstarter at least.

Steve: No to me. It was not niche. It took two mainstream ideas and put them together and Pathfinder to me is mainstream. Its also about catching the attention of the social networks and everything else.

What? Did Steve just say Obsidian Twilight was mainstream and NOT niche? WHAT? This comment shook me to my core. I never thought of Obsidian Twilight as mainstream, let alone thinking about Pathfinder as mainstream. They are both niche right? Wrong. They ARE mainstream. Now A Place Beyond Hell (our Post Apocalyptic Fantasy Cthulhu Survival Horror sourcebook for Pathfinder) is a REAL niche.  After this little talk with Steve, I might have to rethink what I would consider niche is.  Maybe more focus, a more narrow of a view is what I need. Kind of like from spotlight to flashlight now to a laser.  Always more focused, always more intensity.  Maybe one day we will go back a re-Kickstart Obsidian Twilight to add on all the stuff we wanted to and make it ever crazier than we did.  Make it more focused and ramp up the intensity.  Just somehting to think abotu the next time you are working on a project, is this niche enough?  Talk to you later...

Letting people do what they do best AKA why JP does well with NeoExodus...

JP Chapleau and I talk on Skype and Facebook a lot. I mean, A FREAKING LOT! When it comes to NeoExodus we talk about just about every day on every little detail on of the setting from the creative side AND on the business side. Last night we were talking about the mind set of the P'Tan and when he was running games may of the players did not trust them due to their long "relationship" with the First Ones. Many of the players had the concept that the P'Tan at best were "sketchy". I then informed JP that my mind set for creating the P'Tans was based off of America's history of slavery. To me the concept of the field hand salve (the escaped P'Tan) who all he wanted to do it escape and be free versus the house negro (enslaved P'Tan) who even though their life was crap, it was better than taking a chance to escape and risk being caught, tortured and killed violently in the end was the basis for them. And with that little additional information, a little light went on in JP and I could see that he understood them even better meaning he would write them even better.

While I always dreamt about becoming a "well known" author (I know my grammar sucks, so like I said it's a dream), I know my true skill lie in coming up with interesting ideas and getting other people interested, passionate and involved in what I am doing. Then we translate that passion down on paper (or digitally) so other can enjoy it.  That is why I enjoy working with JP. He is PASSIONATE about NeoExodus is the same way I am about NeoExodus.  He gets what I wanted to do in the setting. Better yet. he can translate the craziest of ideas that I send him (and there are many) every day and make sense why they should and shouldn't work in some cases.  JP has a great grasp on what people players like game-wise and game mechanics. It's somewhat of an insane mixture of technical and creative ability and not everyone can do it, and not everyone can do it very well.  That is why I let JP do what he does best.

Also last night, we started talking about the free adventure we are going to do for Free RPG Day.   The biggest issue about this whole Kickstarter project was not only how to make it really successful (which is important) but to showcase the world of NeoExodus to give people a great sampling of the world and what makes it different for what Paizo is doing with Golarion (which to me is MORE important). While just reading the Campaign Book you will see that that NeoExodus is different, it isn't until you play our adventures in NeoExodus that the real power and strength of the setting comes through. Giving people an free opportunity to do that will only expose people to what I already know, NeoExodus isn't just the best setting for Pathfinder, IT IS the best setting on the gaming market today.  This isn't me being cocky, it's me being honest about this product and knowing what we have build here.  So this Kickstarter project we are planning is even more emotional for us because it gives us the opportunity to spread the word of NeoExodus to those looking for that something different.  As always thank for your support of LPJ Design and everything we are trying to do here.  Talk to you later...

New Kickstarter Idea for Free RPG Day...

After seeing what the folks at Jon Brazer Enterprises did for Free RPG Day with Kickstarter, I though to myself that this is something that would be perfect for us here at LPJ Design with the release of NeoExodus: A House Divided Campaign Setting.  So I talked it over with JP Chapleau who thinks it is a great idea, so it looks like we are going to created a Kickstarter project of an adventure for NeoExodus for Free RPG Day. We are hoping to get this Kickstartert project to help us to get at least one copy of our adventure to retailer and there customers.  Every little bit helps get the word out about NeoExodus: A House Divided.

I think we are planning for this one to start at the end of the month of December, so we can start out fresh and new for the new year.  I know, so far, that this adventure will most likely be a 3rd level adventure for Pathfinder.  JP has pitched some crazy ideas but nothing is solid in stone.  I have been working on the funding awards, and I think I have fund some very fun and unique items that upcoming patrons of this Kickstarter project will find interesting and useful.  As of right now, we are going to have patron level funding of $1, $10, $25, $50, $7, $100, $150, $250, $350 and $500. Each level will give patrons something enthralling and exclusive. So best way to learn about what is going on with this project is to like Louis Porter Jr. Design on Facebook or add us to your circle on Google+.

The more of you that talk about and support NeoExodus online and in your local retail store, the greater chance we will have to be successful with NeoExodus.  Any and all help you can give us is great appreciated   Talk to you later...

Forum building software suggestion for LPJDesign.com

So I am interested if anyone out there can suggest any software to use to build forums that is easy to use (meaning I don't want to have to hand code the thing) and will work well with Dreamweaver CS4. If you have any opinions or suggestions, please let me know.  Talk to you later...

Pathfinder Adventure & Game Mechanics Writers Needed

Louis Porter Jr. Design is looking for adventure & game mechanics writers to work on Pathfinder Roleplaying Game rule based PDF adventures.  We would like to hire people who specialize in either the creation of and writing of gaming adventures OR those with an expertise in creating and understanding the game mechanics and balance of Pathfinder.  We are not looking for an individual who believes they can do it all; we are looking for those that specialize in one of the areas we are looking for. The rate of pay for these positions will be directly dependent on your experience, which will be tested to all those that apply for these positions.  If this sounds like something that might interest you and your schedule is not that busy, please feel free to contact us at LMPjr007 [at] gmail [dot] com at your earliest opportunity.
